153/365 Point and Shoot {Daddy Weekend}

This week I’m joining in Point and Shoot over at Fat Mum Slim.

This weekend was all about Daddy time. Lots of Daddy time. Possibly slightly more than the Daddy in question would have liked. But I call it training. I’ll be leaving on Friday morning for the conference and won’t be back until Sunday afternoon. I’m making the husband Instagram the weekend for me so I don’t feel like I’m missing out too much.

But it will be the beginning of a whole lot more of Daddy days. Josh has about 9 days left of work before his 4 weeks of leave starts. I hope he still has his sanity by the end of it.

142/365 Point and Shoot (An Adventure)

This week I’m joining in Point and Shoot over at Fat Mum Slim. On Sunday, despite being in a pancake-breakfast induced coma of sorts we took the munchkin for a long walk down to the park. This weekend was all about adventures. Thanks to her being in her tricycle it was actually quite a long walk. And it was a walk that actually kept us on the path. Not really an option if she’s walking.

But the real treat, was the park at the end of the walk. Because spotting rocks and magpies and trees is all well and good, but climbing, well that’s something else entirely.

86/365 Flying

Riley was catching up on some flying lessons over the weekend, both enjoying the sun in our backyard and on every ride that exists in the local shopping centre. It’s all about the flying. Although weirdly, she’s now scared of the sounds of planes – when she used to just get excited. I’ve ceased even trying to understand the inner workings of the toddler’s mind.

And while she had a grand old time at breakfast on Father’s Day I can’t say the same thing for Josh and I. Because we were seated in the outside area in what seemed like hurricane-strength wind. My coffee was hot for all of about 10 seconds. Riley, on the other hand was in seventh heaven with her ‘cino’ and pancakes. Although to be fair, she didn’t really eat the pancakes – just the scoop of ice cream that came with them.

75/365 Catching the Sun

I wish I had done something wonderfully exciting over the weekend, but between my nausea, voting, watching in horror as the election monstrosity unfolded and dealing with a bout of teething with the munchkin, the best that it got this weekend was sitting in the backyard soaking up some much missed sun.

But you can’t really ask for much more than that, particularly when you’re watching your two year old play with some new dinosours, complete with very menacing growling.

69/365 Allergic to Napping

This is what happens when little people are allergic to taking their nap during the day. All goes along swimmingly well until you notice that they’ve been very quiet and find them passed out on the couch, clutching the iPad at dinner time.

I knew I shouldn’t let her sleep for too long. But I did. Because I just couldn’t bear to disturb that glowing, sleeping face. And yes, she was still grumpy as hell when she woke up nearly two hours later. Luckily there was some bubble-rain in the bath, courtesy of Josh, otherwise things would not have been pretty.

And me? Well, I most certainly did nap. It was Sunday and I left Josh to deal with the non-napping toddler tornado while I spent the afternoon in bed. Deliciously decadent and just what I needed.

63/365 Pyjama Sunday

Yes, it was 6pm and she’d stayed in her pyjamas all day. It was that kind of Sunday. A Sunday of two breakfasts, and a long lazy nap where we both slumbered for about 4 hours, snuggled up in the big bed. Where I did no housework to speak of and the extent of our activity level was going outside to soak up the sun (me on the back porch, her in the sandpit).

And when Riley struggled to get to sleep in the evening (no doubt thanks to that long nap) I happily climbed back into bed at the early hour of 9 and watched as she easily closed her eyes and drifted off, a little smile on her face and her hands around my neck.

57/365 The Big Smoke

Sunday sunrise from the hotel room. Taken on my entirely crappy mobile phone camera. That crappy camera is soon to be replaced by the iPhone 4. Fast forward please!

A girls weekend of musicals (Wicked), shopping (baby clothes) and dining out (favourite Chinese restaurant). All of which was only very slightly tarnished by my beautiful baby crying her little heart out when I left. And yes, I know it would have only lasted for a few minutes while I was leaving. And it was so fantastic to go shopping without toddler wrangling and eat at a leisurely pace. But still it’s always a little heartbreaking.

This morning I came back home to a temporarily very excited munchkin after a delicious pancake breakfast and after her initial enthusiasm I was firmly told to ‘go away’ for a good part of the day. I didn’t mind so much. I crawled under the doona and dozed off while Josh manned the trampoline. And the fact that she woke up at 2am when I was away and was quite distressed? Well that kind of makes me feel worse and better.

But maternal guilt aside, spending time in the city was a bit of a culture shock. It’s now been over 2 years since I lived there. And it shows. I’d forgotten how many weird drunk people there were. Maybe because I was a weird drunk person. Going to David Jones for baby clothes made me feel poor. And walking around made me feel old. So as much fun as I had, it was even better to be home again.

51/365 Lines of Communication

Sometimes after a busy weekend, things go a bit pear shaped. Riley had a big day on Saturday. Which she loved every minute of. I was at my sister’s 40th birthday and she spent the whole day running around the beach house, convincing people to take her down to the beach, hitting her head on wayward bits of furniture and not napping.

So as we were heading home this morning I was not surprised that she fell asleep in the car at about 10am and didn’t wake up until 1:30 this afternoon. Still despite, that very healthy catch up sleep, she was still a little bit out of sorts. And when I failed to interpret a request this afternoon the situation quickly deterioriated into tears, high pitched screaming and all manner of unpleasantness.

Eventually, I figured it out and was able to snap her out of it by pretending to be grumpy myself. Because sometimes the only cure for a real breakdown in communication is the willingness to make an ass of myself.

45/365 My Last Nerve

After a couple of rough days and a sleepless night, I felt like Riley was trampling all over my last nerve. This is when reinforcements come in handy. When all my energy reserves seem tapped out. And my patience is running dry. This is where her Aunt comes in handy.

So while I was enjoying an uninterrupted coffee, they sat opposite me, playing the faces game. Which is really just Riley making a happy face, a sad face, a surprised face and an angry face. At some point she gets too excited and they all become happy faces.

And even I, with my last nerve hanging by a thread, got my happy face on to see her smile with every single muscle in her little body.

39/365 Lazy Sundays

This is the face of someone who had a 4 hour nap. Note the hair. It was all in keeping on a day where I slept in until after 10 and didn’t get out of my PJs until after 1. Which is really exactly how a lazy Sunday should be.

Other highlights included apple berry crumble with double cream, giving Riley a bubble bath while her dad made ‘bubble rain’ and listening to her ‘read’ us bedtime stories instead of the other way around.

And to top it all off, my new favourite phrase of hers is when something doesn’t go the way she would like and she shrugs her shoulders ‘oh, well’.
